Asthma

To speak with one of our clinicians regarding asthma concerns please call our reception on 01827 713664 to arrange a routine appointment where you will be assessed, we will offer you advice, any queries you have will be answered and a correct management plan will be ensured.

Asthma is a condition which affects the airways, when a person with asthma comes into contact with a trigger (for example pollen, house dust mite or cold air) it causes their airways to tighten and narrow, which can make it difficult to breathe. Please check out the following websites for further information and help managing your asthma.

Using your Asthma inhaler

Inhaler technique is a vital part of managing asthma in order to get as much treatment (medication) into your lungs as possible.

See these websites for information and video on how to use your inhaler effectively:

  • wikihow.com/use-an-inhaler
  • asthma.org.uk/advice/inhaler-videos/
  • rightbreathe.com

To save time in your appointment you may wish to visit our SurgeryPod machine located in the main reception waiting area. This allows you to take your own blood pressure reading and fill out relevant questionnaires which will automatically be uploaded onto our system for the clinicians to view.

Important: How to dispose of unwanted and used inhalers

The propellants in commonly used inhalers are powerful greenhouse gases.

Even after the inhaler has been used, significant amounts of the environmentally damaging gases remain in the canister.

Landfill disposal of inhalers is harmful to the environment, due to the residual gas from the canisters being released into the atmosphere.

If all inhalers in the UK were returned for safe disposal, this could save 512,330 tonnes of CO2eq annually - the same as a VW Golf car being driven around the world 88,606 times!

All used inhalers should be returned to a pharmacy to be disposed of safely.
